Mission
Statement
As
stated in our sheet music table of contents, "...as we
choose songs for Sunday worship, we need to focus on worship
songs". Those songs which most effectively encourage
the congregation to sing and praise God, as opposed to the
no-less-worthy, but harder-to-follow and less-explicitly God-centered
performance songs. From time to time we'll use a performance
song, perhaps even a new song from the radio, to accentuate
and contextualize the message; but, our primary goal is to
help our church to worship through our singing and playing.
To focus less on note-perfect performances and more on consciously
spurring on our friends and families to worship God through
song and other artistic expressions. To get our minds off
us and our personal, musical needs.
WHY
WE DO WHAT WE DO?
Our primary raison d'etre is to act as ministers. We are facilitating
worship. This is a huge responsibility. Yes, what we do is
fun. We're here because we love to sing and play. But even
before those things, we love God and love his people. If you're
ready to perform sacrificially and operate as a servant, then
you're welcome to play in this band. There is no place in
this band, however, for players looking for another gig. History
has shown us that these folks flake out eventually---mostly
'cuz Coastlands hasn't vaulted them to stardom quickly enough.
If you're looking for the road to rock 'n' roll glory, you
won't find it here!
WHAT'S
REQUIRED OF ME?
Several
things...experience and ability being the LEAST important.
Above all, you must be active in Coastlands Church--meaning
you need to demonstrate your consistent attendance on Sundays.
Why? Because it's much easier to ask for a worship-band commitment
from a musician who's already demonstrating a desire to be
part of our church. It's much harder if you're church hopping,
because ANY church---and by implication, any worship band---can
end up being your home. The next requirement is your overall
commitment. That means being on time to weekly rehearsals
(7 p.m. Saturdays) and Sunday mornings (8:00 a.m.), willingness
to work through songs without ego intrusion (and to practice
on your own), and giving our worship leader advance notice
when you can't make it to practices or Sunday mornings. We
arrive early on Sunday and everyone is expected to help set
up the stage and equipment. We also stay after to tear down.
From time to time, we're called on to perform special music,
lead prayer, and make announcements. Extensions of these requirements
are detailed in our Band Goals.
HOW
LONG DO I NEED TO DO THIS?
Band members typically stay until things like job changes,
family changes, or life changes curtail or end their participation.
All of the above reasons (with notice :o) are totally fine,
and in some ways, to be expected. But on the other hand,as
stated above, flaker-outers are look upon with great disdain.
We're only looking for people who're in this thing for the
long haul!
If this all makes sense
and you're still interested, please call Mina Gutierrez our
worship leader at 858.864.9677
